Faith and Resistance at the Enola Gay

August 7, 2004

The Enola Gay, the plane that was used to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Aug. 6, 1945 is on display at the Udvar Hazy Museum near Dulles Airport. The display does not mention the human cost of the bomb.

We dropped banners from the balcony above the Enola Gay. Banners read, " Enola Gay: Weapon of Mass Destruction" and "We must face the shame of our horrific history."

Next to the plane, people lay on the floor as if dead.  Ashes were sprinkled on them to remind us all of the consequences of the atomic bomb.

Brian Buckley and Matthew Ochalek are cuffed and arrested by the museum security.  They were charged with disorderly conduct, and attempting to intentionally destroy, deface or damage the Enola Gay Memorial Airplane.

Banner "Weapons of Mass Destruction, Nothing to Celebrate" was hung from the balcony.  Security took the banner.

Security police take the banner, "Hiroshima-Nagasaki: Never Again.  August 6-9, 1945"

ALC activists hold pictures from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Art Laffin continues to speak about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As we were leaving, as instructed, we were led out a door to an area where we were detained..   We are held for 30 minutes (or more) while the police decided what to do with us.  Finally we were escorted through the museum to the outside parking lot where our vehicles were parked.  The museum was closed for 90 minutes, and a big crowd of people were gathered outside.  The police keep us separated from the public.

Brian Buckley and Matthew Ochalek have a court trial on Sept 28 in the Fairfax, Virginia Court.
