Leonor Esguerra writes from Medellin, Colombia:

Mrs. Jo-Ann Jakab, Principal
Kolbe Cathedral High School

Dear Mrs Jakab,

I am writing to you from Medellin, Colombia South America.  Through a common acquaintance I have learned about Mr. Stephen Kobasa´s dimissal from your High School.  I have also read his letter explaining the reasons given for it and also his believes about imposing symbols.

I too am a teacher and have been principal in several catholic girls high schools so I´m not speaking from ignorance.

I sincerely wonder if Mr. Stephen´s students may learn from this isue -replacing the flag in the classroom wall at the expense of his leaving a 25 year teaching practice- deeper human values such as justice, respect for the difference, tolerance, in a word those truly American values which their flag is supposed to represent.

For most of us in the poor countries that flag means war, poverty, brutal imposition and disrespect of our cultures.  So when I learn about USA citizens like Mr. Stephen, I feel reconciled with those brave few true Americans.

                 Truly,
                 Leonor Esguerra, Medellin, Colombia
